One of the most common reasons for staff absence from work is back injury, and statistics show that although many are a result of musculoskeletal disorders caused by badly designed workstations, repetitive movement, and positioning and posture issues, the majority of injuries causing absence are the result of poor manual handling technique leading to accidental injury or long term "wear and tear". There is no work environment that does not, at some point, call on an employee to undertake manual handling tasks – training to identify the hazards to health, and to develop safe manual handling technique is both a legal requirement and a social necessity.
