Paediatric First Aid Basic Skills

The programme is designed to develop basic paediatric first aid skills for those with children (parents or grandparents) or individuals who may come into contact with children as part of their social (clubs and sports) activities, or in their workplace. The content deals with the everyday incidents that may put children at risk of harm or injury.

Awarding Body

Hsh certificate of attendance.

Although the course is not accredited by the HSE, all hsh trainers are HSE accredited and approved.

Guided Learning Hours 5-6

Usually a one day programme, but can be flexible, delivered over split sessions if appropriate.

The course covers:

  • BLS – CPR /airway management
  • Unconscious patient – primary and secondary survey – recovery position
  • The First Aid box
  • Record keeping
  • Common injuries
  • Foreign objects – choking
  • Common childhood illnesses and conditions

Candidates have an opportunity to revisit any particular areas of interest or concern

The course will include practical demonstration and individual participation.

The final assessment takes place at the end of the course. Assessors will evaluate the competence of the candidate by observation of practical skills and verbal assessment of knowledge, understanding and actions. The candidate will be required to demonstrate competency in resuscitation, assisting an unconscious casualty, and assisting a conscious casualty with an injury.

Upon successful completion of the course, candidates will be awarded the HSE approved First Aid at Work Certificate, valid for three years

Assessment of competence is on-going practical and knowledge assessment by trainer. Upon successful completion of the course, candidates will be awarded a certificate of achievement, valid for three years.
