First Aid at Work Certificate

This qualification is designed to give individuals practical first aid skills to deal with an injury or ill health and to effectively fulfil a role as a first aider in their place of work. The course syllabus deals with the treatment of adults and covers a range of common injuries and illnesses. It is designed to give the first aider the skills and confidence to administer first aid when required, to decide when to call for professional help, and to maintain a casualty until such help arrives. It is also suitable training for those who may need knowledge, or have interest in, developing first aid skills for use away from their work environment.

Awarding Body Health and Safety Executive

The course is fully accredited by the HSE and therefore conforms and meets all standards of the Health and Safety (First Aid) regulations 1981.

Guided Learning Hours 18 (usually delivered over 3 days)

The course covers:

  • Role of the first aider
  • Health & Safety
  • Airway management
  • Burns and scalds management
  • Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
  • Eye injuries
  • Fractures - injuries to muscles and joints
  • Management of unconscious patient/fits and convulsions
  • Medical emergencies including child and infant
  • Poisons
  • Shock and fainting
  • Wounds and bleeding
  • Preparation for course assessment

The course will include practical demonstration and individual participation.

The final assessment takes place at the end of the course. Assessors will evaluate the competence of the candidate by observation of practical skills and verbal assessment of knowledge, understanding and actions. The candidate will be required to demonstrate competency in resuscitation, assisting an unconscious casualty, and assisting a conscious casualty with an injury.

Upon successful completion of the course, candidates will be awarded the HSE approved First Aid at Work Certificate, valid for three years
