FIRST AID

So you've done your risk assessments and put controls in place to try and stop injuries occurring, but accidents will happen and people still fall ill. What matters now is that they receive immediate attention

Health & Safety regulations ask for the provision of adequate first aid equipment, facilities and first aid personnel. Many small firms may only need to make the minimum provision but what is deemed adequate will depend not only on the number of personnel employed but also on the level of risk of any particular job. Are employees working with chemicals or maybe dangerous tools or equipment? Are they working at height or are they working alone in remote areas away from immediate help?

Although you have no legal responsibility for non employees, the HSE strongly recommend the public are included in your first aid provision. You need to assess what first aid training is required and what level of training is needed to cover each work area and possibly each shift

Emergency First Aid at Work & First Aid at Work training courses

First Aiders must have a valid certificate of competence. EFAW training enables a first-aider to give emergency first aid to someone who is injured or becomes ill while at work. FAW training also equips the first-aider to apply first aid to a range of specific injuries and illnesses.

An EFAW course is run over one day. A FAW course is run over three days.

Although the HSE strongly recommend more frequent refresher training, certification lasts for a maximum of three years. To renew, first-aiders must take a requalification course to obtain another three-year certificate. This must be achieved before the original certificate expires

Our First Aid instructors are all experienced in their field, delivering the syllabus as approved by the Health and Safety Executive and surpassing their standards for First Aid training
